Where to find information on the scientific and publishing activities of a scientist or a journal?

Databases of Web of Science and Scopus keep a strict record of the publication activities of each journal and scientist, registering their activity using various scientometric services. A researcher whose works are actively published has their own personal account in these bibliographic platforms. It allows analysing their scientific activities, track colleagues' papers, select high-quality journals for publication, and much more..

Author’s profile on Web of Science

Web of Science – is a huge abstract database managed by Clarivate Analytics and helps to quickly search for scientific information on various sciences: social, technical, humanitarian, natural, art. All registered users of this service are offered open access to information search, analysis and management of scientific data.

There is no actual profile in Web of Science. There is the Web of Knowledge platform, where you can view the magazines that are included in WoS, articles, some information about the author and analyse the rating of a periodical.

What does access to this service provide?

- the ability to work with a specific list of articles and citation indicators from the moment of indexing;

- view citation level of any journal;

- find out which university publishes its works more often and who sponsors the publications.

This database is very strict regarding any errors, so you should enter the information you are looking for extremely carefully. The scientist has access to Web of Knowledge in case of subscription of the university in which they work. Thanks to this service, the author can always vividly confirm their scientific and publishing activities.

Another useful service, which is similar to the personal account of the author, but is not directly related to the Web of Science database, is Researcher ID.

The first thing to do is register on the site publons.com, filling out the form. If there are no posts in Web of Science Core Collection yet, to obtain a Researcher ID, you need to contact support, if the publication is already there, then the number will be assigned automatically.

In this service, you can enter the entire history of a scientist’s publishing activity, find the main data about them, their location, information, in which scientific organization they work, in what subject section they conduct the research, time of publication, and more. An author can enter the data on their publications in other journals that are not part of WoS.

Researcher ID helps scientists find each other, their works and identify contributors for future collaboration more easily. The scientists place their articles on this platform more for themselves, for their resume or for providing data on their publications to their management.

What can you do in your profile?

- Update data at any time.

- Upload your works from any databases that are included in WoS.

- Manage the list of publications in EndNote (this is software that helps to more efficiently manage scientific work, namely: it provides citation reports, finds the most suitable journals for the paper, full texts for links, automatically updates them and more, which will be useful for the scientist).

- The profile is available to other users; its model is similar to Facebook.

- Convenient search for contributors, lists of publications and scientific research in different countries.

- Help from the administrator, who organizes and updates the list of publications.

Author’s profile on Scopus

Scopus is another large bibliographic platform that keeps records of all scientific publications and articles published by scientists from around the world..

The service that provides access to the author’s personal profile in Scopus is called Scopus Preview. There, you can find all the key information on the activities of the author or magazine without a subscription, but if you need more serious analytics, a registration will be required.

For each scientist, an account is created automatically, at the time of indexing the first publication, and, thanks to the subscription, the scientist can immediately go to their profile. But with limited (free) access to the Scopus database, there is no way to open the author’s personal account with one article. The profile is opened only after indexing the second paper.

It is very important to proofread your profile so that other authors can easily find you. Data must be correctly translated into English. In the case of lack of knowledge and writing the name of the author in the wrong order, problems may arise – the database will consider the last name to be the first name, and patronymic to be the last name. Then it will be extremely difficult to find such an author. It is almost impossible to fix a mistake in a Scopus profile unless the publisher considers your request and adjusts the data in the published article. You can also contact a consulting company that will help resolve this issue.

 «Author search»

It contains basic information about the scientist and allows you to search for documents by:

- title of abstract, article, journal

- keywords

- first author

- university

- city

- country

- language.

The more specific the query, the better the search results.

When you are looking for an author with a popular last name, information about them may be located after the first 20 entries. Then it’s better to complicate the query and enter more clarifying details: information about thier country, where they work, etc.

When a scientist enters their author’s profile, they can see the data about their place of work, the scientific disciplines they research, the number of citations, the Hirsch index, as well as a simple diagram of their activity for a certain period.

A little lower on the same page, one can see the titles of their articles, their status (open or closed access), the number of citations, etc.

Scopus does not store the full texts of papers; there you can find the main data on the journal (volume, issue, year), author affiliation, abstract, keywords, whether funding was allocated for research and a list of references. Bibliographic sources are the main reason Scopus exists for – an analysis of the level of citation and the activity of publications and authors.

“Sources”

Another important tab in the Scopus profile is at the top right. By clicking on it, we get to a page where you can search by the name of the journal, its subject area, sort publications, search by serial number (ISSN).

If the search does not locate the journal, you need to specify more detailed parameters: open or closed access journal, source type, quartile and more.

After the publication is found, we see all the information about it and can operate this data: since what year has it been published, who is publishing it, its parameters.

A personal account in a database is an important part of a scientist’s publication. It opens up opportunities for the author, other scientists, as well as for joint development and cooperation. The main thing is to constantly publish and monitor the correctness of the data so that it is correctly entered and always up to date.

Each researcher can track periodicals and plan publications in them using these resources. If you do not want to waste your time analyzing how these profiles work, but it is important for you that the information is correctly entered for easy retrieval and further active use of your personal account, you can contact "Scientific Publications – Publ.Science" company for help.

In addition, for many years we have been providing a service for selecting journals for scientific publications. Thanks to our matured experience, our experts analyse the quality of the periodicals and offer the best options to our customers. Thus, the company promotes the publication of scientists in high-quality journals included in the Scopus and Web of Science database, to enhance their research career and increase their scientific rating.
