Why it is important to determine the indexing of a journal in the Scopus database and how to do it

Before choosing a journal for publication in Scopus, it is necessary to seriously analyse the journal's activities. For this, researchers use the Scopus search engine or contact our company so as to save time. First and foremost, you need to check whether the journal is indexed in the database, and only then proceed with investigating its indicators.

Why verify the indexing of a journal in the database?

  1. So that the article to be published in the journal is accepted upon research paper defence.
  2. To secure the scientific article from publishing in predator journals.
  3. To become eligible for a grant, funding.

Verification algorithm

1. We go to the search engine of the Scopus platform, find the Sources section and enter the journal data. This can be the name of the journal or the ISSN, which is a more reliable way to search.

*As an example, we used the Scopus Preview to demonstrate that information can be obtained even without basic platform access.

2. We go to the page of the journal in question and look at its years of coverage. If it is indexed, the Years of Scopus Coverage section will indicate the beginning of indexing and the mark “to date”.

However, there are some important nuances.

1. Rather frequently, a researcher faces the problem of irrelevant information about the indexing of a journal. For example, we used the Journal of Reviews on Global Economics, which was delisted in February this year. In general, the Scopus platform takes up to 4 weeks to update the information, but it often happens that it is very late with this. Therefore, it becomes more difficult to find the relevant indexing data of the journal.

2. Researchers also contact us, claiming that the journal is not indexed because the Years of Coverage section indicates the previous year (2019). This information does not yet suggest the exclusion of the journal from the database, but it requires verification, and our specialists are ready to provide verification of the journal for indexing in Scopus for the current year.

If you still have doubts, you can go to the Scopus Content section and check for the availability of this year's articles. Furthermore, this section will help track the publication dynamics of the journal and draw conclusions regarding its quality.

Important! Look out for the Scopus Coverage terminated entry. This is what indicates that the journal is 100% excluded.
