DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a unique digital identifier of the object. It can include numbers and letters that encrypt information about the object. DOI is used for scientific papers, dissertations, the publication number in general, a separate page, etc. The identifier helps in the search for scientific materials since it indicates a permanent link to a web page. Unlike a link to a website, a DOI cannot be transformed or deleted. In addition, the presence of such an identifier has long been the norm for the design of international scientific papers.

DOI Award: review of agencies (Part 1)To date, there are 11 organisations with the relevant influence and professionalism to award DOI. The company "Scientific Publications" offers to consider in more detail how these companies differ from each other and the features of each of them.

The company started its activities in 2011 in Taiwan. The agency focuses on this country and is engaged in awarding DOI for materials in Chinese, the interface is also made in Chinese. Airiti is engaged in the registration of journals, conference reports, scientific theses and dissertations, research reports, books, and training programmes and is fully integrated with the digital publishing process of Airiti.

Academic journals, books, and publications included in the Airiti library and having a digital version can get DOI faster. The Airiti interface allows registrar organisations to verify the uniqueness and compatibility of the format of the DOI numbers they assign to ensure data quality and accuracy.

China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI)

CNKI is very influential and widespread in China. The history of the company begins in 1996. Nowadays, CNKI has created an integrated system that includes journals, doctoral dissertations, master's theses, newspapers, yearbooks, e-books, patents, standards, etc.

The company mainly focuses on materials in Chinese in the fields of politics, economics, humanities, social sciences, technology, etc. The agency is a symbol of the Chinese electronic publishing industry, which has considerably pushed library systems to switch to digital format and facilitated the work of researchers.

The agency started its activity in 2000 in the USA. Today, the organisation has more than 15 thousand members and is represented in about 140 countries around the world. Crossref uses the largest number of scientists to assign DOI in the CIS countries.

The indisputable advantages of the agency include the fact that it is practically the only one out of 10 accredited that does not have regional restrictions. Crossref contains the largest number of scientific and professional studies, specialises in scientific papers, books, conference materials, etc. The organisation has a powerful database of links and searchable metadata.

The Scientific Publications Company is the official sponsor of Crossref. We can assign DOIs to publishers, research institutions, higher education institutions, libraries, journals, issues, and specific articles in them.

The agency was founded in London in 2009 by organisations from six countries: the British Library, the Danish Technical Information Centre (DTIC), the TU Delft Library (the Netherlands), National Research Council Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (NRC-CISTI), the California Digital Library, the Purdue Institute (USA), the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB).

DataCite assigns a DOI to a dataset. For example, through this agency, such multidisciplinary cloud services as figshare assign DOI to their materials.

Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR)

Entertainment Identifier Registry is founded by MovieLabs, CableLabs, Comcast, and TiVo organisations. This company awards identifiers to films, TV series, and other types of commercial video and audio. EIDR uses a sophisticated deduplication system to avoid re-registering the same object. Therewith, the interface allows registering similar and related objects. Such a system ensures the uniqueness of the materials.

The registrar can be the content owner, aggregator, post-production, or any other organisation authorised to register objects. The DOI consists of a standard registry prefix, a unique suffix, and a key figure.

The Scientific Publications Company constantly monitors the news in the field of science and scientometry, including the general rules for awarding DOI.
